2024 Spring Sailing
Registration for our 2024 Spring After School Sailing will go live on Thursday, 12/14 @ 1230 PST.
Please note that our classes will fill up quickly.
REFUND POLICY
Cancellations within 14 days from the first scheduled day of that class shall receive a 50% refund. Cancellations on or after the start date of a class will not be refunded. All refunds are subject to a $50 processing fee.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
NOVICE OPTIMIST (MONDAY, 3:30-6:00)
Prerequisites: None! This is our introductory, learn-to-sail class for sailors 7-11 years old. It is also recommended sailors restart here if they have not sailed since last summer.

Description: This is our introductory sailing class geared towards first-time sailors and first-time program participants. Sailed in 8’ pram style dinghies, known as Optimist SailCubes, sailors gain hands on experience under the supervision of certified instructors. This class has a linear progression that teaches and builds on fundamental skills such as; rigging your boat, steering, body placement, sail trim, tacking/gybing, sail theory and much more! It is common for participants to repeat this class more than once.
INTERMEDIATE OPTIMIST (WEDNESDAY, 3:30-6:00)
Prerequisites: A minimum of 1-2 sessions of SBYSF Summer Novice Sailing, currently enrollment in Intermediate sailing, or similar experience.

Description: This class builds upon skills learned in Novice Sailing. Our goal with this class is to have sailors who can confidently sail upwind. Many sailors will choose to complete the Intermediate class a few times to master this skill. After finding success sailing upwind, sailors are ready to start developing as racers! It is common for participants to repeat this class more than once.
HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY (WEDNESDAY, 3:30-6:00)
Prerequisites: A minimum of 1-2 sessions of SBYSF Summer Teen CFJ Sailing. Sailors must be 7th grade or higher.

Description: Our HS JV program is designed for sailors who have participated in our intro Teen CFJ Summer Class and are thinking about joining their High School Sailing Team. This class builds on the elements of our Teen CFJ Class with a focus on racing boathandling, speed, tactics, and starting.
GREEN FLEET OPTIMIST RACING (THURSDAY/FRIDAY, 3:30-6:00)
Prerequisites: A minimum of two sessions of SBYSF Intermediate Sailing or previous enrollment/experience in SBYSF Green Fleet.

Description: Welcome the the world of youth sailboat racing! This exciting step is aimed to have sailors gain knowledge and skills necessary to start racing. Topics covered include; basic rules of racing, starting technique, race course familiarity, more advanced boat handling, introduction to boat speed and more. Sailors are encouraged to participate in local regattas such as the SBYC Goblin.
CHAMP FLEET OPTIMIST RACING (WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY, 3:00-6:00)
Prerequisites: Current participation in SBYSF’s Optimist Champ Fleet and/or approval by SBYSF Program Director and Head Optimist Coach is required. Racing at a similar program is also subject to approval.
Green Fleet sailors looking to advance should contact SBYSF Program Director, Nick Kaschak. Guidelines for advancement to Champ Fleet include: winning one Green Fleet regatta, placing top-5 at 3 or more Green Fleet Regattas, or racing at one full season of Carrie Series events.

Description: SBYSF’s Optimist Champ Fleet is a high-level training group working towards success. The class is aimed at providing sailors the skills necessary to compete at the regional, national and international level. Many participants are actively racing at the USODA National-level. Coaches follow a programming model which is tuned toward addressing and working on sailors weaknesses and strengths. Many topics are covered including; advanced boat handling, boat speed work, improved training processes, starting technique, strategy/tactics, team racing and racing rules. Sailors are highly encouraged to participate in the Carrie, Harken, WCCs, PCCs, as well as National-level events.
HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY (TUESDAY/THURSDAY, 2:30-6:00)
Prerequisites: Prior or current experience on a High School Racing Team. SBYSF Champ Fleet Team Members in 8th grade. Approval by SBYSF Program Director.

Description: Our High School Varsity Team commonly ranks amongst the top ten in the highly-competitive PCISA District. The Varsity teams, representing various local schools, practice twice a week and travel to district events. Sailors work on advanced boat handling, speed, starting, and tactics/strategy.
SBYSF ILCA/LASER PROGRAM (MONDAYS, 2:30-6:00)
Prerequisites: Racing experience in the Optimist Dingy at Champ Fleet Level (7th/8th graders). Prior experience and/or enrollment in the SBYSF ILCA Program. Please contact SBYSF Program Director with any questions.

Description: The SBYSF Laser Program is designed for sailors looking to race singlehanded dinghies. It is intended for sailors who have graduated from Optimists or other small boats and are 8th grade level students through seniors in high school. SBYSF offers a variety of training options throughout the year. During the school year, we offer Monday after school Laser practices. Additionally, we run high-performance clinics during school breaks and occasional weekends. Sailors must own their own personal ILCA dinghy. Limited charter boats are available.
